The Animal Ward

The Animal Ward

I am the beast,
the horse that bites into the rein,
the naked darkness
between her thighs. I remember
the sound of her heart, the soul
in the fat of my palms.
The beautiful face shining as
the love goes straight to hell.
All that forced trucking of the body,
so that I perish when I don't have it.
Fail in the cruel double wanting.
Woman but the bread fruit
of the wailing animal. Certainly
I must be clean, clean up,
stop the busting open--
Quit, but cannot cease.
