Mourning Is

Painting by Sylvia Maier

mourning is

mourning is
lowering yourself
into obscurity
and, along the
way, wedging
markers into
the sharpest
memories
secure enough
to withhold the
weight of
acceptance
when you are
ready to pull
yourself out
.

the first week’s mourning and the first year’s mourning
