Your Heart

Your Heart

took a chance once,
went skinny-dipping on a hot day
was striking out towards
the centre of the lake
when the sun glittering
on the surface like silver flakes
made it think of broken glass
and it raced to the shore.
safe again.
Since then
the trips it takes are short.
measured--around the block.
a park it knows the limits of.
a door-key like a talisman
pressed against its skin.

And sometimes it shudders
awake from a dream
where it's pumping along a street
towards a double-decker bus
easing away from the curb
the pole glinting
just out of reach.
